Supreme Court Judgment Ends Anyanwu’s PDP Leadership Claims, Interim NWC Takes Over
A fresh crisis may have been laid to rest in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following the release of the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the Supreme Court judgment, which reportedly affirmed the suspension of former National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, and dismissed the cross-appeal filed by him and others.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, party stakeholders backing the Interim National Working Committee (iNWC) described the apex court ruling as “the final judicial burial of an era marked by defiance of party discipline and constitutional order.”
According to the statement, the Supreme Court unanimously dismissed the cross-appeal instituted by Anyanwu and his allies, thereby upholding their suspension from the party.
“The Supreme Court has spoken with one voice: the suspension of Samuel Anyanwu and his cohorts remains valid and subsisting. In the eyes of the law, a suspended official is a legal non-entity regarding party administration,” the statement read.
It further argued that any decision, appointment, or communiqué issued by Anyanwu and those aligned with him during the period of suspension lacked legal standing and should be regarded as null and void.
The statement also attacked the March 29, 2026 National Convention held in Abuja, describing it as “a charade” allegedly convened by individuals without legal authority.
It maintained that since the conveners were under suspension or expulsion, the convention and all decisions reached at the gathering were invalid from inception.
“Since the conveners lacked the legal capacity to act, the entire March 29 exercise is a nullity ab initio. Any leadership emerging from that gathering is a product of illegality and will not be recognized by any organ of the party or by the laws of the Federation,” the statement added.
To avert what it described as a looming leadership vacuum, the statement said the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), during its 103rd meeting presided over by Senator Adolphus Wabara, approved the appointment of an Interim National Working Committee.
The interim body, chaired by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), has now formally assumed the administrative leadership of the PDP in line with the provisions of the PDP Constitution (2017 as amended), the statement noted.
Supporters of the iNWC further referenced portions of the Supreme Court judgment, particularly pages 34, 81, 98, 101, and 130 to 139, insisting that all five justices dismissed the cross-appeal filed by Anyanwu and others.
The development is expected to deepen the ongoing power tussle within the opposition party ahead of future political activities and internal reorganization.
