Over 8,000 Ebonyi Civil Servants, Families Benefit From State-Funded Health Insurance Scheme

The Ebonyi State Government says more than 8,000 civil servants and their families are currently benefiting from its fully subsidised health insurance programme, as part of ongoing efforts to expand access to affordable healthcare across the state.

According to data released by the Ebonyi State Health Insurance Agency (EBSHIA), a total of 137,133 residents have so far been enrolled in the State Health Insurance Scheme since its expansion in May 2023.
Of this number, 8,061 beneficiaries are civil servants, including their spouses and up to four biological children below the age of 18. The government fully funds their coverage, with no premium contributions required from workers.

The scheme, introduced under the administration of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, is designed to improve healthcare access and reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses for residents, particularly public sector workers.
EBSHIA noted that beneficiaries have accessed a wide range of healthcare services across accredited public and private facilities, including primary, secondary and tertiary care.

Medical services accessed under the scheme include:

1,118 eye screenings and 1,005 provision of medicated eyeglasses

102 eye surgeries

98 hernia repairs and 46 fibroid surgeries

Complex procedures including mastectomy (1 case), thyroidectomy (1 case), and brain surgery (1 case)

76 normal deliveries and 18 caesarean sections

Treatment of 1,895 severe malaria cases

Screening of 2,586 persons for hypertension and diabetes

Ongoing management of 457 hypertension cases and 35 diabetes cases

Emergency treatment for road traffic accidents (2 cases)

Management of other conditions such as benign prostate hyperplasia, typhoid fever, sepsis, peptic ulcer disease and gastroenteritis
The agency also disclosed that the programme is being expanded to include retirees, while advocacy efforts are ongoing to enroll more local government staff across the state.

Officials say the initiative is part of broader healthcare reforms aimed at strengthening universal health coverage and improving welfare outcomes for workers and vulnerable populations in Ebonyi State.
