Diri Urges Traditional Rulers To Promote Peace At King Awala’s Coronation
Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has called on traditional rulers across the state to remain steadfast in promoting peace, security, and stability within their domains as a vital contribution to development.
The governor made the appeal during the coronation of His Royal Majesty, King Victor Demezie Awala, Ebeni-Ibe VIII of Atissa Kingdom, held at the Bishop Dimieari Grammar School in Yenagoa over the weekend.
Represented by his deputy, Dr. Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Governor Diri emphasized the pivotal role of traditional institutions as custodians of culture and tradition, noting that his administration would continue to accord them due respect and recognition.
He commended the people of Epie-Atissa for their sustained peaceful disposition, attributing the relative calm in the state capital to their cooperation and unity. According to him, the achievements recorded by his administration would not have been possible without the support of the people, particularly in maintaining peace and security.
Congratulating King Awala on his emergence as a first-class traditional ruler, Diri urged the monarch to justify the confidence reposed in him by his people through dedicated and selfless leadership.
The governor also lauded the kingdom for acknowledging the role of God in human affairs, noting their decision to involve the General Overseer of Living Faith Church Worldwide, David Oyedepo, in the coronation ceremony.
In a goodwill message, former President, Goodluck Jonathan, represented by Chief Tobias James, described the emergence of King Awala as a reflection of the trust and confidence of his people in his leadership. He expressed optimism that the monarch’s reign would foster unity, peace, and development in Atissa Kingdom.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Bayelsa State Traditional Rulers Council, King Bubaraye Dakolo, commended the people of Atissa for conducting a peaceful and hitch-free succession process. He pledged the council’s readiness to work collaboratively with the new monarch.
Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Steve Azaiki, highlighted the rich history of the Atissa Kingdom, paying tribute to past rulers and their contributions to the kingdom’s growth.
In his acceptance speech, King Awala expressed gratitude to God and appreciated Governor Diri, former President Jonathan, and other dignitaries for their support and presence at the event.
A major highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of the staff of office to the monarch by the state government, as well as his crowning, performed by representatives of Bishop Oyedepo.
The event attracted several prominent personalities, including political leaders, traditional rulers, and members of the state executive council.
