APC Imo To Diaspora Aspirants: Return Home, Build Grassroots Support Or Forget Ticket

The Imo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has cautioned aspirants seeking its nomination for the 2026 elections to return to their wards and build genuine grassroots support, stressing that party tickets will not be secured from Abuja.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday, the party expressed concern over the activities of certain individuals who, despite having little or no visible involvement in party structures at ward and local government levels, have obtained nomination forms and are laying claim to high-level endorsements.

The party specifically warned against what it described as “fraudulent name-dropping,” where some aspirants allegedly claim backing from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma.

According to the statement, active participation in party affairs—including consistent engagement, payment of dues, and verifiable presence at the grassroots—is a fundamental requirement for anyone seeking to contest under the APC platform.

“The right to emerge as a candidate of our great party is strictly reserved for active, supportive, and identifiable members,” the statement read.

The party further emphasized President Tinubu’s long-standing democratic credentials, noting that he has consistently opposed any form of imposition in the political process. It urged aspirants to desist from linking the President to undemocratic practices.

On the role of the governor, the APC described Governor Uzodimma as a firm advocate of due process and rule of law, dismissing claims that he has anointed any candidate. It reiterated that all aspirants would be given a level playing field through transparent primaries or consensus arrangements in line with party guidelines.

The party also reaffirmed its commitment to the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2026, and its internal rules, assuring members and the public that the nomination process would be conducted fairly.

While acknowledging the right of any party member to contest, the APC insisted that popularity among constituents and the ability to mobilize grassroots support remain key determinants for securing the party’s ticket.

It urged aspirants to prioritize party unity and collective success over personal ambition, reminding them that only one candidate will emerge per constituency and that all members are expected to support the eventual flagbearer.

“Anyone who wishes to fly the party’s flag must return home and canvass support among the people,” the statement concluded.
