Diri’s Leadership Redefines ‘Difficult Terrain’ Narrative In Bayelsa — Ikuli

The Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, has been commended for what has been described as a bold and transformative approach to infrastructure development, effectively dispelling long-held concerns about the state’s challenging terrain.

Drawing an analogy from a military anecdote about institutional habits and the value of proactive leadership, the Technical Adviser to the Governor on Media and Public Affairs said Governor Diri’s administration has demonstrated rare courage and vision in tackling projects previously considered impracticable.

According to the aide, past administrations at both federal and state levels had often cited the state’s difficult, riverine environment as a major impediment to executing key infrastructure projects, including the Angiama-Oporoma-Otuan road and bridges, Nembe-Brass road, and the Ekeremor-Agge road.

He noted, however, that the current administration has “demystified” that narrative through deliberate policies and sustained commitment to development.

“The story of the proactive military commander who questioned long-standing practices mirrors what Governor Diri has done in Bayelsa. For years, the issue of difficult terrain was used as justification for inaction. Today, that narrative has changed,” he said.

The aide highlighted the extensive sandfilling and engineering efforts undertaken by the government, describing them as comparable to laying the foundation of a one-storey structure before actual road construction across several kilometres.

He further stated that the governor’s infrastructural drive has significantly altered the state’s geography, reducing its largely riverine isolation by linking previously inaccessible communities through a network of roads and bridges.

“Before now, over half of Bayelsa was largely cut off due to its terrain. Today, there is increased connectivity, improved social interaction, and enhanced access to economic opportunities,” he added.

The aide also pointed to improvements in security, noting a decline in incidents such as sea piracy in parts of Southern Ijaw and surrounding areas, alongside reduced transportation costs for residents.

He described Governor Diri’s leadership as a testament to purposeful governance, adding that the administration’s achievements align with the principle that good leadership brings tangible benefits to the people.

The Technical Adviser to the Governor on Media and Public Affairs expressed appreciation to residents of the state for their continued support for the administration, urging sustained collaboration to consolidate the gains recorded so far.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering on its development agenda under the Assured Prosperity Programme.
